3 Reasons You MUST Train Your Dog
Whether you train your dog on your own or enlist the help of a professional trainer or behavior expert - you must train your dog.
Expecting them to "grow out of it" or leaving it up to chance can be downright dangerous for you and your dog.
Reasons To Train
1). SAFETY -
I am a super overprotective mom.
I've seen stuff over the years. Trust me. Things happen and training prepares your dog just in case.
Training is really an insurance policy for your dog.
Training an emergency recall is crucial.
Frankly, if you can't get your dog out of the street and back to you where it is safe it doesn't matter what else he knows.
Training also teaches your dog to be well behaved so your vet and rescuers can help your dog in case of a natural disaster.
The pictures of animals being saved from hurricanes and fires makes this even clearer.
Your dogs (and cats) have to be well behaved so they can be saved.
2). LEGAL -
I hate to be a buzz kill, but an ill behaved dog opens you up for lawsuits.
It's just the reality of the situation. You are responsible for your dog's actions.
If your dog jumps on someone resulting in an injury you could be liable. And then of course there's dog bites. Yikes. Need I say more?
3). SANITY -
A well behaved do is a joy to be around. An ill behaved dog can drive you crazy.
Imagine the peace of your dog walking nicely next to you on a walk, sitting politely for greetings, and quietly chewing a toy while you have coffee with friends. The only way to get that is through training.
But training is not just going to class once a week. Training is every day. Every interaction you have with your dog they are learning. So make sure you are teaching them what you want them to learn.
Often we teach what we don't want. By playing the wrong games you can actually encourage excitability or running away. Slight changes can make all the difference in your results.
There are many very easy ways to integrate the training into your life and your daily routine.
But you have to do it.
30 minutes a day is the minimum you should be training your dog.
Just do 5 minutes here, 5 minutes there. It adds up quickly. But you have to do it.
Don't leave it to chance. Your dog is way too important for that.
Also, your relationship with your dog is way too important. I know how great it can be. I don't want you to miss it.
